DO NOT ALLOW OUR LOCAL POLITICIANS TO COMMERCIALIZE VETERAN'S PARK AND DENGEGRATE THE MEMORY OF OUR FALLEN HEROS

Meeting Scheduled for May 16, 2007 at 6 PM
Norwalk Town Hall

There is a proposal in front of the Common Council to take a portion of Veteran's Park in East Norwalk, CT and lease it to a private business for the purpose of building a miniature golf course and a set of batting cages.

It was the intention of some of the Counsel Members to do this quietly without the input of the residents who are most effected by it.  When The Norwalk Hour found out about it they came out Four-Square against the proposal.

If you believe we should not lose precious public land to private businesses

If you believe there is already enough traffic on Seaview Avenue

If you believe the Veteran's Park is to honor the Veterans of our town and belongs to the residents of Norwalk

Please Skip Dinner on May 16th and oppose this project!
Meeting will be held at City Hall in the Concert Hall

Westport has an outdoor amphitheater. There are strict regulations on sound levels and times when the site may be used. Norwalk, if it must have this at all, should accept no worse conditions than Westport. We should think about any development on public land in terms of whether or not it upgrades the quality of life here, not in terms of whether it makes money for the city in the short or long term. The amount of money a site could earn can not possibly compensate for a reduction in the reputation of Norwalk as an attractive place to live. Concert venues rarely improve the quality of the areas around them. To the contrary. We should not have an amphitheater in Vets Park without permanent and enforceable regulations consistent with an improvement in the quality of the neighborhood, using Westport's experience as the minimum.

The commercialization of Vets Park is being persued solely at the behest of local developers to increase traffic to South Norwalk. The park is doing just fine as it is. What is about the current mindset that things in Norwalk have to change. We've been here for over twenty years and can remember when there was a civility to life in Norwalk. The traffic, overcrowding, rudeness, and overpriced cost of living have just about ruined any community spirit that existed in the past. We are a community of adversaries.

Thanks for your efforts. I too would like our beautiful park to be maintained for passive use, and prohibit commercialization. Maybe the Oyster Festival was the right idea in 1979, but the neighborhood is far too congested now for large festivals.
